3 Levers of Product
Scope, time, and resources — a lens of constraints for engaging others objectively, precisely, and fairly.
¶What are the 3 levers of Product?
- The 3 Levers of Product are Scope, Time and Resources
- Scope - what you have to complete to fulfill the intended outcome
- Time - by when you intend for the outcome to be completed
- Resources - who you can use to complete the intended outcome
¶Using levers as constraints
For example, you cannot increase scope, decrease resources and expect to achieve the same time horizon delivery.
Another example, you may have a project that has a sudden reduction in time horizon. Your only options is to either increase resources (keep scope), decrease scope (keep resources) or decrease resources and decrease scope which would be the most inefficient option.
- One critical outcome of using this framework is alignment on which levers you intend on manipulating vs. keeping constant The decision of which lever to manipulates is highly dependent on the status of your team/company and of the value of the outcome.
- The 3 levers of product framework shows itself the best when you are working with others and all looking together at a burndown list which clearly states scope in a prioritized way that makes it easy to understand what scope could get cut if other constraints were to be applied.
