5 Day Alignment

Misalignment is natural; staying misaligned isn’t. Resolve within five days or escalate cleanly, together.

It’s crucial for everyone to stay aligned and on the same page as much as possible. However, natural disruptions may occur, and the expectation is that these are addressed within a 5-Day Alignment process, or escalated appropriately if unresolved.

Alignment vs. Misalignment

  • “Misalignment” refers to a lack of proper alignment or arrangement between elements that should ideally be in sync
    • Organizational or Strategic Misalignment: When goals, strategies, or priorities within a business, team, or organization do not align, leading to inefficiencies or conflicts.
    • Cognitive or Value Misalignment: When individual beliefs, values, or expectations are not in harmony with those of a group or system, such as in relationships or teams.
  • Alignment on the other hand is all aspects of a business, such as goals, strategies, and resources, are coordinated and working toward the same objectives. It often implies that the efforts of different teams or departments are harmonized to achieve common company goals

Clean Escalations

  • Bring joint perspectives to an agreed upon manager to make a final decision
  • Be completely transparent about where the misalignment is occurring together
  • Parties all agree to commit to the decision regardless of the outcome.
  • Escalation should occur after a 5-day alignment period. If you bypass this step, it will be considered a testament for your independent ability to realign.
